Prayer
Lord
of creation, whose glory is around and within us: open our eyes to your
wonders, that we may serve you with reverence and know your peace at our lives'
end, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Collect for the Sixteenth Sunday
after Trinity
O Lord,
we beseech thee, let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy Church; and,
because it cannot continue in safety without thy succour, preserve it evermore
by thy help and goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Harvest Prayer from Christian Aid
for today,
Harvest Festival in St. Mary’s, Long Crendon:
Happy are those who have bread to eat!
As grain grows in the fields and
Rains bring the water of life we share
Visions of all your people united in
Eternal praise and kneaded together to
Share good news of justice and peace:
Taste and see that the Lord is good!
The Friends of St Mary’s was formed in 1979 to provide a dedicated means for
money to be raised for the preservation and improvement of the fabric of our
lovely 13th century parish church. The
Society was active from the start and over £100,000 was raised in the 1980s and
1990s. Since 2007 St Mary’s has
undertaken a succession of major projects, including redecoration and
installing a toilet and servery. This
was followed by the renewal of the lead on the nave and transept roofs,
together with the repair of their supporting wooden frameworks, and the
improvement of the access through the west door. Generous help was given towards the cost of
these projects from English Heritage, using Heritage Lottery Fund finance, plus
other charities, including the Bucks Historic Churches Trust, but The Friends
contributed over £200,000 towards the total cost of about £650,000.
Unfortunately, the immediate repair saga is not yet over as the east end of the chancel needs urgent repair. A further project to underpin and repair the walls and repair the roof and east window, with its beautiful stained glass window, is just starting. Maintenance of an old historic building is a continuous and expensive process, but that is what The Friends are all about! We hold frequent and different events to raise funds. You can see all our events on our web site at www.FSMLongCrendon.org All contributions are thankfully received and will be faithfully applied. We'd love to see you at any of our future events, including our AGM on Sunday 11th October (see details below).
