St Nicholas
St. Nicholas
was born in Asia Minor.
He was named bishop of Myra,
a poor and run-down diocese.
When his wealthy parents died, he gave
his wealth to the poor and devoted himself to the conversion of sinners.
Once he heard that a man who had become very
poor intended to abandon his three daughters to prostitution because he could
not afford a dowry
for them to be married. Nicholas, the
story goes, on three occasions threw a bag of gold through the window into the
room of the sleeping father. His
daughters soon were married. Later the
father came to Nicholas, fell at his feet and said, "Nicholas, you are my
helper. You have delivered my soul and
my daughters' souls from hell."
This
story and his many other works of charity led to the tradition of giving
presents on Nicholas' feast day and at Christmas in his name. The name ‘Santa Claus’, used widely in
mainland Europe, evolved from his name.
Nicholas died at Myra in 350 AD. His popularity, already great, increased when
his relics
were brought to Bari,
Italy, in 1087. Both the Eastern and Western churches honour
him. St. Nicholas is the patron saint
of Russia, Greece, Apulia,
Sicily, and Lorraine. He is
regarded as the special patron of children.
St Nicholas is the patron saint of our church here in Chearsley along with St Nicholas in Nether Winchendon. Come along to Nether Winchendon church on Sunday at 10am to celebrate our Patronal Festival.

Lost
Where’s Woolly?
Woolly and 23 of his little sheep friends are lost all over Chearsley.
Can you help us find them and reunite them with their Shepherds
and the Nativity Scene before Christmas Day?
Download an entry sheet here
If you spot one, write its name down next to its number. Then bring the completed sheet
to the 3pm Christmas Eve Crib Service at the church, to win a finder’s prize and see all the sheep reunited.

Prayers from Sunday
Last Sunday,at our Toy Service, the Rev Derek Witchell suggested that the children's prayers be put on our website so that we could all use them this week, so here they are:
Dear
Lord
We
ask that the children’s gifts we offer today will bring happiness, fun and
laughter to those who receive them.
Please
take care of all children everywhere.
Keep them safe from danger
and help them to grow up strong and good.
Keep them safe from danger
and help them to grow up strong and good.
In
times of darkness, may your light shine strong in their lives.
We
pray for all the families and victims of the violence in Paris last week. We
pray for all people around the world who are suffering in wars. We ask for the hatred and fear to stop, and
for your love to show us the way towards peace.
As
we rush and worry in our daily lives, help us to stop and let the words of
Jesus into our hearts. May our faith grow strong so that we can trust in you
every day.
As
Christmas approaches, let us remember the true meaning of the birth of your
Son, Jesus. May we be generous in spirit to others – helping our families and
friends and showing care and consideration to everyone we meet.
Lord
in your mercy
Hear our prayers
Amen

They shall grow
not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

anxieties with the liberating love of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Collect for
the Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

We
are grateful to Derek Witchell for taking the Holy Communion service in Long Crendon,
and to Ian Ogilvie for taking Evensong in Nether Winchendon today. Derek has kindly sent us the following: “I am a retired priest living in Thame with my wife and two
children (yes, they're still at home!) and a Border Terrier. I've lived in the area off and on for many
years. I'm a former pupil of Lord
Williams School and had an architectural practice in Thame for 25 years before
training for ordination. I served my
curacy at Bloxham and was priest in charge at Wing, Wingrave, Aston Abbotts,
Cublington, Cheddington and Mentmore before retiring from parish ministry. My wife and I now have a ministry to parents
whose children are LGBT+, and I serve on Diocesan Synod, Bishops Council and
the DAC. One of the great joys of
'retirement' is to be free to lead worship for many different congregations in
the area and I'm looking forward to joining you to worship together.”
And Ian has kindly written:
“The Rev. Ian Ogilvie was educated
at Cambridge. He is married with two
adult sons. He began his career at Holy
Trinity, Clapham Common where he ran a Youth Club for Rockers(!), before
working for three years as curate to the late Bishop Hugh Montefiore, who was
at that time Vicar of the University Church, Cambridge. The major part of his ministry was in
education as Chaplain of two schools and later a Headmaster. The
latter part of his working life was working for three charities as Director of
Fundraising. While never a full time
vicar, Ian has been linked with many parishes and he and his wife are members
of St. Peter and St. Paul Church, Tring, although he is seldom there as he does
locum work most of the time. He looks forward to meeting the people at
Nether Winchendon for the first time this evening.”

Lord
of creation, whose glory is around and within us: open our eyes to your
wonders, that we may serve you with reverence and know your peace at our lives'
end, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Collect for the Sixteenth Sunday
after Trinity
O Lord,
we beseech thee, let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy Church; and,
because it cannot continue in safety without thy succour, preserve it evermore
by thy help and goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Harvest Prayer from Christian Aid
for today,
Harvest Festival in St. Mary’s, Long Crendon:
Happy are those who have bread to eat!
As grain grows in the fields and
Rains bring the water of life we share
Visions of all your people united in
Eternal praise and kneaded together to
Share good news of justice and peace:
Taste and see that the Lord is good!
The Friends of St Mary’s was formed in 1979 to provide a dedicated means for
money to be raised for the preservation and improvement of the fabric of our
lovely 13th century parish church. The
Society was active from the start and over £100,000 was raised in the 1980s and
1990s. Since 2007 St Mary’s has
undertaken a succession of major projects, including redecoration and
installing a toilet and servery. This
was followed by the renewal of the lead on the nave and transept roofs,
together with the repair of their supporting wooden frameworks, and the
improvement of the access through the west door. Generous help was given towards the cost of
these projects from English Heritage, using Heritage Lottery Fund finance, plus
other charities, including the Bucks Historic Churches Trust, but The Friends
contributed over £200,000 towards the total cost of about £650,000.
Unfortunately, the immediate repair saga is not yet over as the east end of the chancel needs urgent repair. A further project to underpin and repair the walls and repair the roof and east window, with its beautiful stained glass window, is just starting. Maintenance of an old historic building is a continuous and expensive process, but that is what The Friends are all about! We hold frequent and different events to raise funds. You can see all our events on our web site at www.FSMLongCrendon.org All contributions are thankfully received and will be faithfully applied. We'd love to see you at any of our future events, including our AGM on Sunday 11th October (see details below).
