Jesus is born

A Christmas Greeting from our Vicar,
the Reverend Richard Phillips:
Welcome to Christmas! Reflecting on this momentous year, I am reminded that, in coming to live a human life as Jesus, God assures us that He's never going to give up on the world He created.

If you are left with any questions, comments about our services, or suggestions about the way your churches serve the local community, please email me on reverend.richard.phillips@gmail.com, or call the vicarage on 208987.

In the meantime, can I thank you on behalf of my family for the tremendous welcome we've received since moving here in September, and wish you a blessed Christmas.

Richard

This Sunday we have a double celebration.  It is our annual "Patronal Service" where we remember the patron saint of our church and that of Nether Winchendon - St Nicholas.  This will be combined with our annual Toy Service, where toys are collected and then distributed to less fortunate children.  If you would like to donate a toy, please note that it would be helpful if the toys could be unwrapped and new, and can also be items suitable for older children not just little ones.  Thank you.

Prayer Request

An Emergency Call to Prayer
for the City of Mosul
Samaritan’s Purse is calling on churches across the UK to take part in an emergency call to prayer for the Iraqi city of Mosul, ahead of the proposed offensive to retake the city from ISIS.

Mosul is Iraq’s second largest city and the primary remaining stronghold of ISIS in the country. As preparations are made for the offensive the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) warns that at least 700,000 residents from Iraq’s second city and surrounding areas will need urgent assistance in the form of food, shelter, water and medical support.

A recent report from  the UNCHR highlights the struggle these people will face whilst leaving the city:14-year-old Ali and his family fled Mosul recently, in a group of 23 people. The group were attacked and he saw his neighbours shot dead. Only five of the group made it out, the rest were captured or killed.

This story is, unfortunately, an increasingly common example of the lengths ISIS are going to in order to retain their grip on Mosul. The city is becoming increasingly fortified, with lines of defence consisting of booby traps and suicide bombers alongside ISIS gunmen. It is also becoming increasingly clear that ISIS intends to use trafficked women as human shields.
Samaritan’s Purse teams on the ground have been told to expect up to 200,000 people fleeing Mosul in need of assistance and protection within the first 24-48 hours. As such, our teams have been working non-stop to pre-position supplies in order to respond to the looming humanitarian crisis and provide critical compassionate and life-saving assistance to families in Jesus’ name.

Please take a moment to lift up the city of Mosul and the nation of Iraq. Pray for God’s guiding hand on the offensive and for the safe movement of families fleeing their homes.

'Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful' Hebrews 10:23 (NKJV)

May God Bless You,
Simon Barrington, Executive Director

Morning Celebration - 9th October 2016

This Sunday we have our Morning Celebration service, which as usual will be modern and informal and will include refreshments both before and after the service.

This month, with the help of any willing volunteers, we will be acting out the story of the 10 lepers, who were all healed, but only 1 remembered to say thank you.   We will be thinking about all the things in our lives we are grateful for, so hopefully it will be an uplifting service which you will leave with a smile on your face and a glow in your heart .

Do come along, we'd love to see you.

Harvest Celebrations

On Saturday 24th, we gathered together in the village hall to celebrate harvest with a fantastic spread of food and an eclectic mix of home grown entertainment including singing from Fenella and a vicar sketch from Sheepy. Our new vicar Richard bravely volunteered to join in and played the piano to accompany his wife Louise with her beautiful flute music.  But the highlight as ever, had to be Neville who sang us some opera and then dressed as a nun for a rendition of "How you do solve a problem like Maria?"  Tara and helpers did an amazing job of making the hall look beautiful with oak tables and candelabras and some of our youngsters volunteered as waiters and waitresses.  A great evening.  No wonder it was sold out early.

Then on Sunday, Richard led his first Family Service which was a Harvest celebration.  The church looked beautiful with its floral decorations, loaves and other produce.  And this year, Alicia had organised a mosaic with the help of some village children. We intend to leave it up for a few weeks so please do go along and take a look.

Produce was collected and delivered to the Porch Steppin Stone centre for the homeless in Oxford.

A rare glimpse at our hidden music makers...

And a message from Richard...

Can I thank you for your part in the weekend’s harvest celebrations, and ask you to pass on my thanks to those whom you co-ordinated in some way!

Louise and I were blown away by the Supper on the Saturday evening – a real sense of a community celebrating together – an amazing job from Tara and the team.

And the Service and brunch on Sunday were a joy to be part of, with the church looking awesome thanks to the flowers and food displays – including both the loaves of bread - and the amazing mosaic. Great Music and great bells, and I really appreciate the link with Steppin’ Stones.

What an expression of God’s hospitality and his joy for everyone in Chearsley!

God bless

Richard

Harvest Festival - 25th September 2016

This Sunday at St Nicholas’ will be the Harvest Festival Family service. It will be a lovely service celebrating this time of year – taken by our new vicar, Rev. Richard Phillips. After the service there is a “bring and share” brunch outside  (weather looks fairly good for the weekend!).

If any of you coming are able to bring something for the brunch table that would be most appreciated – savoury or sweet dishes are all welcome! It is usually a lovely spread.

Also, at this service we are asking for any donations of dry or canned foods for the charity “Steppin’ Stones” in Oxford - http://www.theporch.org.uk/ . The charity provides support for the homeless and vulnerable. Any donations you can bring will be most appreciated and help to give someone a warm, healthy meal who might otherwise go without.

Morning Celebration - 11th September

Today in our Morning Celebration service we thought about how several of us had started new schools with new teachers, but all of us had a new teacher, in our new vicar Richard Phillips.  We also thought about how we are all part of the Body of Christ and as such, had talents that could help and support Richard in his new role.  We all made body parts to represent our talents.  As you can see several people felt that they were ears as they were good listeners and could help Richard by visiting people in the Benefice.  He also has several extra helping hands, a couple of feet (for running errands), eyes (to look out for people in need), a mouth (to help teach) and a big heart to care.

Historic Cycle Ride

We have done it!

17.5 miles, wet to the skin and slightly less perky than we were when we started!   We visited our list of 15 churches.

Thank you for all those who have kindly sponsored us already, it is a good encouragement to have so many behind us.

For those still want to support St Nicholas we have a JustGiving page and will be in church twice tomorrow to collect sponsorship.
