Steve Lock

A fond farewell to Stephen Lock
June 8th 1958 – February 7th 2016

On Friday 26th February, family, friends and colleagues gathered to say their final goodbyes to villager, Steve Lock at our lovely church here in Chearsley. The sun streaming through the windows on glowing pots of yellow daffodils (Steve’s favourite colour) set the scene for a beautiful and spiritual service led by The Reverend Jeremy Harris of Maidenhead.

Steve’s daughter Alison bravely gave a touching and occasionally amusing insight into the life of her beloved father. A lovely Bible reading from 1 John about the virtue of love, a poem depicting the lark rising and disappearing into the clouds, and a moving rendition of  “I vow to thee my country” offered the opportunity for quiet contemplation and reflection.

As the ‘Not Forgotten’ standard bearer dipped the flag, Steve’s remains were laid to rest in the churchyard, and at that moment a Chinook helicopter flew directly overhead – a coincidence or Divine intervention? Harking back to his RAF days on active service, Steve always maintained that the distinctive rumbling sound, far from being an irritation, was to him a sign of help, rescue and ultimately peace.

Steve, “rest in peace. You will be missed, be it at St Nicholas’ ringing the bells, enjoying a pint at The Bell, cheering for England at the Cricket Pavilion or representing the fallen at the War Memorial, we will remember you”.
